Young People's Substance Misuse Sub-Group
The Young
Peoples Substance Misuse Sub Group is chaired by the Assistant Director
of Children's Services and has a membership of agencies covering:
- Community Education
- Connexions
- Devon and Cornwall Constabulary
- Education
- Safer Communities
- Children's Services
- Torbay Care Trust
- Voluntary Sector
The overall
aim of the group is to:-
- improve the psychological and physiological
well-being of young people under 18 years of age who misuse substances
and those affected by other's drug use e.g. parents / carers misusing
drugs within the Torbay area.
- educate young people under the age
of 18 to the dangers and effects of harmful substances and help
prevent this age group from developing substance misuse problems.
- pool budgets through the Young Peoples
Commissioning Group to allow a more holistic approach to the agenda
of young people and their families.
The outcomes of these aims are to prevent
todays young people becoming tomorrow's problematic drug users.
The young peoples substance misuse sub
group define substances as illegal and legally obtainable drugs
including alcohol, tobacco, volatile substances (glues and lighter
fuel etc) and medicines obtained without prescription. "Young
people" refers to those young people under 18 years old; however
there may be work with some 18 year olds to ensure adequate transition
arrangments are put in place as they move to adult service provision.
The remit
of the sub-group extends to all matters relating to young people
and substances covering:
- generic and primary services providing
substance education, simple interventions and referral;
- youth orientated services providing
drug related prevention and targeted advice and general counselling
service and specific interventions;
- services providing specialist drug
services and other specialised services that work with complex
issues;
- services providing very specialist
and intensive forms of intervention that my include specialist
residential services and mental health teams.
The sub-group ensures a continued system
of transition from young peoples services to adult treatment services.
