The Family Intervention Project

Family Intervention Projects (FIPs) are set up in a number of areas throughout the country.

The purpose of a FIP is to provide intensive targeted support to those families that cause a disproportionate amount of issues (such as anti-social behaviour) in their neighbourhoods.

The aim of the Torbay FIP is to:

  • Engage families in an intensive package of support.
  • Work with families based on their needs, through adopting a whole family approach.
  • Develop and deliver a comprehensive plan of action and change with families through identified outcomes for all members of the family.
  • Work closely with multi-agency partners to assist families to re-engage with mainstream services.
  • Enable families to live positively within their local communities.
  • Enable parents to successfully meet the needs of their children within the family home.

Key Workers work closely with partners from a range of agencies and support parents to improve their outcomes through a variety of evidenced based and creative approaches.

Parents are supported to better understand their children’s needs through attendance or engagement with evidenced based parenting programmes, firm support from Key Workers and enjoying positive activities with their children.

Key Workers use a combination of individual and family work, co-ordinating other services in an appropriate manner at the family’s pace. This is vital to recognise that a family must be motivated and engaged with necessary plans to enable ‘true’ commitment and achieve sustainable long term change.

FIP workers support families to make long term changes to their lifestyles and their behaviours so that they can become a positive part of their community.

The Torbay FIP works intensively with families for an average of between 12 and 18 months in order to challenge and address their behaviour. The issues that the families face often include various difficulties that impact on their ability to function. Difficulties can include being subject to domestic abuse, substance misuse, poor or no educational attendance, worklessness, parenting issues and isolation.
