Safer Communities Torbay (SCT) has worked with many agencies, community groups and individuals on projects and initiatives that deal with what is known as Hate Crime. This work has included:
A Hate Crime is any offence committed against a person or property which is motivated by the offenders hatred of people because they are seen being different. You don’t have to be from a minority community to be a victim of a hate crime.
Being the victim of crime can be a terrifying and frightening experience for anyone but especially so for those with a disability. The Safe Place Scheme aims to reduce the stresses and trauma suffered post crime by those with disabilities.
As part of the scheme special cards are issued to any disabled or vulnerable person. Each card has space for names and contact details to call in an emergency. If a shop or other business features a Safe Place Scheme sticker, any disabled or vulnerable person can enter and hand their card to a member of staff who will use the identified contact details to call for aid.
The scheme was originally introduced by South Devon and Dartmoor Community Safety Partnership, and has since been introduced throughout the South Hams, Teignbridge, West Devon and Torbay.
Many local businesses in Torbay have got on board with the initiative, undertaking specialised training and guidance to better understand the needs and requirements of disabled members of the community. To find out more please visit the keeping safe website.
