You Said We Did

Safer Comunities Torbay (SCT) used to engage with local residents through something called You Said. We Did.

You Said. We Did. involved public events and the aim was to:

  • Meet with a wide range of people from across Torbay.
  • Listen to residents about issues relating to crime and Anti-Social Behaviour.
  • Take action in response to issues raised.
  • Let residents know what had been done.

The latest series of events brought together:

  • Young people
  • Older people
  • Black, Ethnic and Minority Groups
  • Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Groups
  • People with Disabilities

We also developed an on-line reporting form and a postcard which could be completed and returned via freepost to any Council or Police Building, for anyone who was unable to attend the public events. The postcard was also circulated widely across Torbay through Primary Schools, Libraries, Doctors Surgeries, Large Employers, all Council and Partner Agency Buildings.

A number of actions and specific projects took place in response to the consultation events and these were delivered by a range of different agencies. Those projects included work around bringing different generations together and supporting young victims of crime.

Is it easy to talk to us?

SCT is rethinking the way it engages with people living and working in Torbay about community safety issues and concerns. We know that sometimes there is criticism that residents are often asked for their views on issues, but not sure what has happened after that.

We want to learn from constructive criticism and want to get better at engaging with residents. If we get it wrong please tell us so that we can improve (and apologise!).

Although it is our aim to work with residents to make Torbay safer we can’t promise to take action in response to every issue that is raised with us. Sometimes this is due to legislation we have to work to, or it could be due to resources, funding etc. If you raise an issue with us and we can’t take action we will tell you why so that you know you haven’t been ignored.

There are also many community safety issues that SCT and other agencies can’t solve on their own. When this happens we will ask local residents to help us.
