Why do we have a Community Safety Partnership?

Two heads are better than one and the purpose of Safer Communities Torbay (SCT) is to bring agencies and communities together to help make Torbay a safer place.

On some occasions one agency can deal with an issue but there are times when agencies, voluntary groups and citizens must work together to tackle community safety issues and make long term positive changes.

SCT aims to make Torbay a safer environment and for our area to have less victims of crime. SCT works to give people the opportunity to change and to help make local people feel safer about where they live.

Based on what we know about crime in Torbay, SCT has three priority areas that it focuses on and these are:

Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB)

ASB is linked to many community safety problems such as fear of crime and substance misuse. We know that ASB is the main crime and disorder issue for our citizens.

Domestic Abuse

Domestic Abuse is often a hidden crime that can have a huge impact on victims and families. It accounts for approximately a quarter of all violent crimes. Alcohol and drugs are involved in about half of domestic violence incidents and we know that children are present at more than 2 in 5 incidents.

Offending and Re-offending

Some individuals can be responsible for a disproportionate amount of crime which is not only damaging for citizens but very expensive for agencies to deal with. It is also better for citizens and statutory agency budgets if offending can be prevented altogether.
