I've been a Victim of ASB

Anti-Social Behaviour (or ASB) is behaviour which negatively affects your quality of life.

This could include rowdy and noisy behaviour, anti-social driving, disputes with neighbours, persistent verbal abuse, harassment, disorderly behaviour and aggressive begging.

If you’ve been the victim of ASB, please report it.

Some people don’t report ASB and that may be for a number of reasons, but if agencies like the police and the council don’t receive information they can’t try to take any action against those responsible.

Your details will be kept in strict confidence and will not be disclosed to the person(s) you have complained about without your consent. How your complaint will be handled will be discussed with you.

How can I report it?

ASB isn’t okay, it isn’t ‘normal’ and you don’t have to put up with it. In Torbay you can report ASB on telephone 01803 207900. Please note that this number should not be used for emergency calls, and it operates an answering service out of hours. In an emergency situation telephone 999.

You can also email an ASB report to asb@torbay.gov.uk.

If you do decide to report ASB please give as much information as possible. To take action against those causing ASB, agencies will need detailed information about individuals.

When reporting, remember to tell us:

  • What you experienced
  • Where you experienced it
  • When it happened
  • Who was involved
  • How it affected you
  • If it has happened before / part of ongoing issues
  • If you feel vulnerable / at risk

What will happen if I report anti-social behaviour?

If you report anti-social behaviour your report will be sent to the ASB Team. An officer from the ASB Team will contact you and tell you who will be dealing with your complaint.

When the ASB Team has as a detailed understanding of your case, they will decide what taken may be taken.

ASB is often dealt with by several agencies working together, such as the ASB Team, Police and / or Housing Associations. It may be that your complaint should be dealt with by another agency. If this is the case you will be notified of where your complaint has been referred to so you know who is dealing with it.

Information is shared in confidence between agencies to ensure that cases are effectively managed and progressed.

After reporting ASB, actions that could be taken include:

  • The issuing of warnings.
  • Arranging mediation between you and the person(s) whose behaviour is concerning you.
  • Use of Acceptable Behaviour Contracts (ABCs).

The aim of these measures is to stop the behaviour and protect you and your community from harm.

If these measures don’t work, the ASB Team may try to take action through the Court by applying for an Anti-Social Behaviour Order (ASBO) to stop the behaviour.
