The project has now developed an additional team who focus on offending, in addition to ASB. The team works with families to provide proactive and practical support, with the aim of stopping offending behaviour. This is in addition to responding to crisis, which can occur on a regular basis at the outset. The team liaise regularly with all partner agencies and utilise other creative approaches to seeking support, to include charitable organisations and third sector providers.
Multi-agency working is integral to the work and relies on the cohesion of approaches to plans, encompassing commitment from all to sustain a consistent approach.
The project works in parallel with Child Protection plans, works closely with Education, the Police and YOT in addition to fostering positive relationships with Registered Social Landlords and the ASB team, in order to prevent eviction and protect families from becoming homeless.
Key workers for the projects come from a variety of backgrounds bringing different skills, which increase the viability of addressing specific issues directly as they occur. The team include two qualified teacher, a referral co-ordinator, a previous Manager of residential units for adolescents with complex needs, a domestic violence support worker and an ex-street warden. We have now also recruited a qualified Social Worker and an additional three key workers who joined the team in the early spring.
While Torbay’s project is early in it’s inception, early results are significant and include a reduction in Police ‘call outs’ from over 500 in the 12 months prior to engagement to fewer than 50 for all families since working with the FIP.
