Hate Crime

Hate CrimeHate Crime is any offence committed against a person or property which is motivated by the offenders hatred of people because they are seen being different. You don’t have to be from a minority community to be a victim of a hate crime.

Hate crime hurts, it can be confusing and frightening. By reporting it, you may be able to prevent these crimes from happening to someone else.

Reporting makes a difference…to you, your friends, your life.

What can I report?

Any incident where you or anyone else has been targeted because they or you are believed to be of a different

  • Race
  • Religion
  • Sexual orientation
  • Gender identity
  • Or have a disability

Domestic abuse involving anyone which you have a close relationship with: e.g. your current or previous partner.

Any incident you believe was motivated by:

  • Racism
  • Religion / belief
  • Homophobia
  • Transphobia
  • Disability

e.g. incidents may involve verbal abuse, harassment, attacks, damage to your property, bullying or graffiti.

Why Report it?

The self-reporting system allows you as the victim, witness, parent, carer or any concerned person to report an incident to the police by giving us a little or as much personal information as you wish.

By filling out this form you will:

Enable the police and partnership agencies to build up patterns of behavior, highlight areas of concern and provide us with a ‘True Vision’ of hate crime within your community.

Without the details:

The report will be used for monitoring purpose to get a true vision of what Is happening.

With your detail:

The incident can be investigated fully and you can get the service you deserve and the support you need.

Questions?

Q: If I give my details, will the police contact me?

A: Only if you want us to. You choose the preferred method e.g. by mobile phone or at another address, we will be happy to make alternative arrangements, only if YOU want us to.

Q: What happens if I agree for my details to be passed to a multi agency partnership?

A: With your permission the information you provide may be used when working with other agencies, such as the council or housing to prevent this type of incident happening again.

Agencies may also be able to offer you support and assistance.

How can I report it?

There are a number of ways you can report a crime:

Phone the police

There are specially trained police officers, who can speak to you in confidence.

Self reporting

Call in to your local police station where someone will take the details of your complaint.

If you are unsure and want advice about making a complaint, please call your local Diversity Officer. You can speak to him or her anonymously or in confidence if you wish, by ringing 08452 777444 and asking to speak to a diverse communities team officer, or you can ring Crimestoppers on 0800 555111
