Intergenerational Project History

Although generational divides have been developing in recent years, it was a Safer Communities initiative; ‘You Said We Did’ that clearly highlighted the issues occurring between Torbay residents. Throughout 2010, both generations were asked in-depth questions regarding all aspects of living in Torbay including any concerns or fears they had. The most significant response was the misunderstanding between each group. Elderly people frequently referred to the fear and anxiety evoked by youths regarding them as ‘hoodies’ or ‘yobs’. In direct relation to this, many of the youths questioned stated that they felt the older people in their communities did not like them and felt resented by them.

Despite this obvious link, what remained interesting was that when questioned about their feelings towards their community environments, both parties were in agreement that it was a high priority to maintain standards for all to enjoy. This may suggest that the common ground may be a platform in which to encourage integration.
