Devon and Cornwall is statistically now the 3rd safest place to live throughout the UK, however, we need to maintain our vigilance to keep it this way.
With this in mind Safer Communities Torbay want to encourage local residents to be mindful when dealing with people calling at their address unannounced.
Most people who knock at the door are genuine but some are not. Particularly at risk are the vulnerable members of our community who can be easily conned or tricked by unscrupulous criminals. If someone suspects or are concerned about the activities of someone cold calling in their street or on friends, family or neighbours, who could be seen as vulnerable, should not delay in contacting the police on 08452 444 777 or the local Trading Standards Office on 01803 208038.
Anyone agreeing to have house maintenance work undertaken by a cold caller, can initially seem attractive and a cheaper alternative. However, this can so easily lead to a low standard of workmanship that carries no guarantee if there are problems later on. The price quoted at the door may very often increase once the work is finished. If anyone needs to have any maintenance carried out on their house we would urge you to use a bonafide local tradesperson.
Insp. Mel Broad, Devon and Cornwall Police said “Regretfully even here in Torbay we still hear of dreadful cases of the elderly being targeted by unscrupulous con men who are in my mind criminals. These cold callers are carrying out work for which they can often over charge, pressurising members of the community to hand over cash for substandard work that has no guarantee or means of reimbursement if you are unsatisfied with the product.
“The message from the police is NEVER hand cash over in advance, always use your door chain and check the identity of the caller even on a pre-arranged appointment.”
