Agencies join forces to drum home compliance messages

Release Date: 14 December 2009

Torbay Council Licensing Officers, Police, Fire Service and Trading Standards representatives have joined forces in a recent spate of unannounced visits to premises across the bay.

The previous 4 Saturday nights (and with more still to come) have seen the multi-agency task force frequenting venues to ensure compliance with the 2003 Licensing Act conditions.

Identifying fire safety issues, potential risk assessment concerns and other licensing infringements have been key parts of the visits, but visits have also been strongly focused on identifying premises where underage drinkers and ‘drunk’ patrons are served; violating the two key conditions of the premises licence.

With the Christmas and New Year festivities fast approaching, Steve Cox of Torbay Council’s Licensing department has this message for licensees; “There are some really good operators in Torbay and we want to praise the great work they do. There has been a lot of effort and focus over the last few years in changing perceptions of the harbourside. It really is a good night out now, and this is because we are all working together for the same result. The message is clear – operate responsibly or we will ensure that you don’t operate at all.”

Glen Mayhew, Partnership Inspector adds; “We are not impressed with premises who think that all-you-can-drink offers are a responsible way of operating. We have warned licensees about what kind of behaviour will not be tolerated and together with our partner agencies will make sure that these venues receive the scrutiny they deserve. We want Torquay to be an enjoyable and safe night out for all.”

The visits are due to continue over the Christmas and New Year period acting not only in identifying those who are currently breaching their conditions but also as a deterrent to those who might be inclined to maximise their profits over the festive period by running negligent drink offers.

Louisa Aiton, Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Engagement comments; “It is of the utmost importance for Torbay to maintain its good reputation. Regular inspections are a necessary part of the process. The harbourside is especially a great night out; safe, controlled and welcoming.”
