Release Date: October 2009
Have you ever wondered how the legal system works? Do you wonder why some sentences seem more lenient than others? Do you think you could do better? You now have the chance to do just that. The Devon and Cornwall Criminal Justice Board and Safer Communities Torbay bring you a unique opportunity to decide on an appropriate sentence for each of our cases as we invite you to be the judge.
You will be taken through each case and will then have to interactively vote on what appropriate sentence the defendant should receive. The real outcomes will then be revealed and you will have the opportunity to listen to the factors and influences that influenced the real sentencing, the role of magistrates and how the Justice System works.
The 'You be the Judge' event is taking place at the Torquay Palace Hotel between 6pm and 8pm on Wednesday 21st of October 2009. The event is taking place during Inside Justice Week, a national initiative aimed at opening up the Criminal Justice System to the public.
Devon and Cornwall Criminal Justice Board is made up of Chief Officers from the Police, Probation Service, Courts, the Crown Prosecution Service, Youth Offending team and Her Majesty’s Prison Service. It plays a vital role in the fight to reduce crime; bringing offenders to justice and increasing public confidence in the criminal justice system by improving cooperation and communication between relevant partner agencies.
The event is free and refreshments (also free of charge) will be provided during the coffee break.
