Saturday 26 June will see the first ever Annual Award Ceremony for Torbay’s Community 999 Cadets.
Awards will be presented for ‘Best Cadet’, ‘Best Cadets Cadet’ and ‘Outstanding Contribution’. Cadets will also be holding a parade and demonstrating their skills in fire and police scenarios.
Youth Intervention Officer, Ruth Le Messurier, from Devon & Cornwall Police said: “Since launching in May 2009, the 999 Cadets have been a great success with some 30 local teenagers aged 13 to16 years old working alongside fire and police teams every Thursday evening to develop new skills such as fire safety and crime reduction.
“The ceremony on Saturday will be an excellent way for Devon and Cornwall Police, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service with partners such as Safer Communities Torbay to reward the cadets for all their hard work and dedication.
“It gives young people great insight into the work of the emergency services and shows our commitment to partnership working in Torbay.”
Patrick Tyler, Community Safety Manager, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: “The 999 Community Cadets is a sustainable long term project which aims to create a positive learning experience which will inspire and educate young people, with the overarching aim of helping to create a safer community by reducing anti social behaviour and fire setting crime amongst young people.
“This first year has exceeded all our expectations and the cadets are a credit to their generation and have all worked extremely hard to reach the standards we have set for them”.
