A special 'ladies only' football-free zone is being set up in Brixham to get away from World Cup hysteria later this month.
Rather than watching the football, women in the Bay will be able to learn how to avoid becoming the victims of crime.
Sgt Dave Casley of Brixham police has organised the one-off event for long-suffering ladies who feel cold-shouldered by the global sporting spectacular.
And interest in the single-sex initiative at Brixham Community College's main hall on Wednesday, June 23, from 2pm to 8pm is already taking off.
"A lot of people have said it's just what they want. Nothing like this has been done before locally," he said.
Supported by Safer Communities Torbay the aim of the exercise is to give women an insight into how they can avoid becoming a victim of crime or receive a visit from the emergency services.
A range of demonstrations and talks is being lined up for the day, including basic training in self-defence, internet chatroom awareness, safe sex instruction, fire safety chats and information on women's health issues including breast cancer.
A world kick-boxing champion will also be dropping in to show off her skills against a PCSO who is proficient at the sport. Organisers will be handing out personal attack and rape alarm gadgets.
"We are hoping quite a few people will turn up and benefit from what is being offered," said Sgt Casley.
Anyone who wants to know more about the eventcan contact Sgt Dave Casley on 08452 777444 or Mandy Riley, Project Officer, Safer Communities Torbay on 01803 841274.
