A coffee afternoon was arranged between the residents of Albany court supported living home and Victoria Park youth centre. The intergenerational event was a chance for young people to meet the close by residents of Albany court to enjoy an afternoon of mingling and some fun activities.
Like similar projects, the aim of this event was to bring about a better understanding of generations for Torbay residents. Targeted due to the negative associations many local people have with the area, Victoria Park Youth Centre provided the ideal base to welcome members of the local community.
Margaret who is 90, happily taught several young people card games and even knew a few magic tricks to entertain them. In turn the young people involved the residents in playing on the Wii computer game and had an interactive game of bowling and tennis with several residents. Several of the Albany court residents had questions about the youth centre and what the young people enjoyed doing at the centre. It was great to see social interaction between the very different age groups and a willingness to get to know each other.
Mandy Riley, Projects Manager for Safer Communities Torbay is very confident about the project and its continued success; 'Because the issues we are tackling were bought to our attention by the community via the 'You Said We Did' events, we are confident we are directly addressing what the locals want. Victoria Park has been on our target list for some time now so we were really happy with the progress made during the event. We are hoping this is the beginning of a strong relationship between all parties.'
