Wednesday 22 June 2010 saw the first special 'ladies only' football-free zone held at Brixham Community College.
Rather than watching the football, women across Torbay learnt how to avoid becoming victims of crime and were able to watch a range of demonstrations and talks on basic training in self-defence, internet chatroom awareness, safe sex instruction, fire safety and information on women's health issues including breast cancer and drug and alcohol use.
Supported by Safer Communities Torbay, the aim of the exercise was to give women an insight into how they can avoid becoming a victim of crime or receive a visit from the emergency services.
A world kick-boxing champion also showed off her skills against a Police Community Support Officer who is proficient at the sport. Organisers handed out personal attack and rape alarm gadgets.
One young lady who attended the event, Shez Bullock said, ‘This ladies event was good, and I found out a lot of information from the stands.’
Mandy Riley, Project Manager for Safer Communities Torbay said “The event was well attended by all generations from Torbay, it was great to see so many organisations coming together in order to spread ‘how to be safe’ messages.
