Junior Life Skills

Junior Life SkillsTorbay Junior Life Skills is a hands-on training experience for Year Six pupils only. It takes place during two events through the course of the Academic Year.

It introduces them, in a safe way, to some of the risks they face in the home and the world around them and offers some ideas on how to cope and who to turn to in time of need. It is provided and staffed by a variety of professional bodies that provide as practical a learning experience as possible for our children. This now truly is an inclusive event encompassing 36 schools and approximately 1500 pupils including those with special needs.

Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service has kindly offered to host all events at Torquay Fire Station, Newton Road.

The children need no preparatory instruction in school, apart from a brief explanation of the aims and objectives. Their visit to the event will be a mixture of teaching and practical experience, and teacher’s resource packs are provided for follow on work.

At present 10 minute scenarios are provided by the following agencies:

  • British Telecom - How to Use the 999 System
  • RNLI - Beach Safety
  • Devon & Cornwall Constabulary - Cyber Bullying Awareness and Internet Safety
  • Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue - Fire Safety
  • Western Power - Safety Around Electricity
  • British Red Cross/St Johns Ambulance - First Aid
  • Torbay Council - Alcohol Awareness, Food Safety and Road Safety
  • Torbay Lifestyles Team - Smoking Awareness and Healthy Eating
